Giving

Giving

As you look to covenant to a deep degree with us, the third area we want to put before you is the way you worship God with your finances. This principle of giving extends to your possessions (house, car, stuff, etc.), but particularly in view here is the way in which you express your gratitude for God's work in your life through your finances.

Giving Is Biblical & Important

When we examine the story of God, we see that the God who brought everything into existence has called his people to represent themselves to each other and the watching world in unique and striking ways. One of the ways that God's People were called to show their trust in God was to provide for the poor and needy among them (verse reference) and by worshipping God with their produce (verse reference). This generous heart towards God was extended when the church was birthed. The Bible says that they held everything in common (reference). They viewed their money and possessions in radically different ways that was noticeable and striking.

- shows your dependence on God
- unchains your heart from the love of money

Giving To Your Local Church

There are many good reasons to give in light of what we see in Scripture, but are we called to give to our local church? The Bible does not give explicit direction to us on who we are to give or how this giving should take place. There are great reasons however for you to give to your local church in response to God's work in your heart.

Endears your heart to what God is doing through your church family
This type of giving is good because it is another way that you can attach your heart to the work that God is doing in your church family. As you regularly give to your church, you are a part of the outworking of your church and may find your heart rejoicing in unique ways as your church family grows.

Allows you to recognize your small part in something much bigger than yourself
There is a humbling aspect to financial giving to your local church that may take place in your heart as you realize that the part you play is relatively small, but significantly important. As Paul compels us to appreciate every aspect of the body of Christ, giving to a local church can show you your role in that body and also allow you to more fully appreciate the role of others parts of the body of believers to which you are joined.

Testifies to your value of the church and God's mission
When you give to your local church, it is also the most salient way for you to display your value of God's Mission in your city and community. Your local church is simply a local expression of God's Church (all believers throughout the world and time) and because of this, your specific giving to your local church testifies to your heart and others of your value in God's Church at large.

Reflects a consistent commitment to the work God is doing in your city
You local church inhabits a unique space in your city and has been placed there purposefully to bless their city. When you give to your local church, this giving will bless your city as your church seeks to live out the implications of the Gospel in all of life. Each local church has unique ways that they seek to bless their city and your giving helps your city to flourish by supporting the efforts of your church to come alongside your city.

Reflects a commitment to the work God is doing around the world
